Body image is one of the main factors that affect self-esteem. The ever-changing ideal body image creates stress for many teens. Worrying about what I look like, worrying about my weight, worrying about if I look “good”. I look at myself in the mirror every day, and I tell myself,
“I’m too tall”
“I’m too skinny”
“I’m too fat”
“I’m too short”
“I’m too ugly”
We go through these obstacles in life every day. Wondering if we can fit into societal expectations, self-esteem is one of the hardest things to build. We struggle with self-esteem and body image as we mature. We want to be accepted by our friends, and we compare ourselves with others in order to do so. Photos of airbrushed models are everywhere—magazines, billboards, television. The “perfect”, ideal body image is everywhere, influencing our individual thoughts. Are we attractive? Are our physical images…adequate? Media is one of the main factors that affect a teenager’s mindset. We begin comparing ourselves to others, judging ourselves based on how we look, but not who we are. Learning to accept ourselves for who we are and appreciating ourselves for what we have are important steps to take to build strong, self-esteem. Follow your passions and chase your dreams; focus on your individual talents and skills. My physical image does not define who I am.
