Causes of depression
Depression can be caused by many factors, and these causes can never be limited in a list. However, NY Times has compiled a list, which can be split into two major causes.
Medical causes:
Life issues:
If anyone you know has gone through multiple of these, be on the lookout - they could develop depression. People who are experiencing both medical and life-related trauma can be very susceptible to depression. Additionally, depression can simply reflect genetics: some people are more likely to develop it throughout their lives than others.

- Long-term pain
- Sleeping problems
- Steroid medications
- Underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism)

- Abuse or neglect
- Breaking up with a significant other
- Death of a friend or family member
- Divorce, including that of a parent
- Failing a class
- Illness, personal or in the family
- Job loss
- Social isolation (common for elderly and adolescents)
